In 1492, during Columbus' first voyage to the "new world", he visited the island of Cuba. His sailors were introduced to "Cohiba" by the island natives, a bunch of dried leaves that were smoked in a pipe called a "Tobacco".
In 1982, three types of Cohiba Cuban cigars were introduced to non-diplomats: the Lanceros, the Coronas Especiales and the Panatelas. Three more vitoles were added to the brand in 1989: the Esplйndidos, the Robustos and the Exquisitos, completing what is known as "La Lнnea Clasica". Five more vitoles were added in 1992 creating the "Linea 1492": the Siglo I, II, III, IV and V. Cohiba remains the “King of the Cubans”. Only the finest tobacco leaves are used to create the various types of Cohiba cigars.
Following is brief description of some of the most popular Cohibas presently available in the marketplace:
The Cohiba Esplendido
Size: 7" x 47 (178 x 18.65 mm) Julieta, a churchill
Description: This Cohiba is the churchill of the brand. Its' large ring gauge and length make it a bold yet smooth smoke. Great to pair with a red wine as an after dinner cigar. This Cohiba Espledido is a serious time commitment to smoke and definateley is reserved for an experienced cigar smoker.
The Cohiba Robusto
Size: 4 7/8" x 50 (124 x 19.84 mm) Robusto, a robusto or rothschild
Description: The Cohiba Robusto is a magnificently constructed robusto. The even burn, easy draw, and large ring gauge make this a very enjoyable smoke. Hints of wood, spice (some sat cloves) can be tasted in this creamy cigar.
The Cohiba Corona Especial
Size: 6" x 38 (152 x 15.08 mm) Laguito No. 2, a panetela
This is a medium to heavier cigar compared to your average Cuban Cigar. Because it is a thinner cigar you get less pull from it which makes it a lighter less intense smoke compared to the larger Cohibas. An earthy, woody gentler smoke that we have seen become lighter over the years.
The Cohiba Lancero
Size: 7 1/2" x 38 (192 x 15.08 mm) Laguito No. 1, a long panetela
Very earthy flavors resonate throughout this long yet small ring gauge Cohiba. A consistent and slightly lighter flavored Cohiba cigar. Very
consistent feedback from experienced and novice cigar smokers cites
this Cohiba as a balanced flavored cigar. The flavors of wood and
spice are still present as in cigars like the Cohiba Robusto but
they're more muted and smooth than some of the other cigars produced
under the Cohiba name.
The Cohiba Piramides
Size: 6 1/8" x 52 (156 x 20.64 mm) Pirámide, a pyramid or torpedo
This Cohiba seems to have a strong reaction from many Cohiba lovers. Some purists claim that this just doesn't taste like the other Cohibas, but then again it is a limmitted edition, something that is rare and unique . Regardless of whether this is true to the Cohiba brand this is a sublime cigar. The piramide is very well constructed and very spicy, some Scotch lovers claim that a peaty Scotch will bring out the true bouquet of this earthy yet strong cigar.
The Cohiba Siglo Series
The Cohiba Siglo I
Size: 4" x 40 (102 x 15.87 mm) Perla, a tres petit corona
This is a great cigar for someone who wants a rich full flavored cigar that they can smoke in under 30 minutes. This is a well balanced smooth yet strong cigar that is fast burning and easy to pull.
The Cohiba Siglo II
Size: 5 1/8" x 42 (129 x 16.67 mm) Mareva, a petit corona
Great with a Cognac or a sweeter Scotch like an Oban or Highland Park 18 year old. This is a rich oily wrappered cigar that is packed with flavor. Well blended you will find many flavors that will challenge your pallette.
The Cohiba Siglo III
Size: 6 1/8" x 42 (155 x 16.67 mm) Corona Grande, a long corona
A sophisticated elegant cigar beautifully constructed cigar. A rich spicy, vanilla like woody flavor that is quite bold. It's size and oily wrapper definateley make a statement about the quality of this cigar.
The Cohiba Siglo IV
Size: 5 5/8" x 46 (143 x 18.26 mm) Corona Gorda, a corona gorda
This cigar is a Cuban masterpiece. A lot of thought and discerning testing has gone into every Cohiba Siglo IV. It's construction guarantees a great draw and a consistent burn. This Cohiba seems to have the complexity that you have come to expect but with a much bigger intense taste. Definateley for the tenured Cuban cigar smoker.
The Cohiba Siglo V
Size: 6 3/4" x 43 (170 x 17.07 mm) Dalia, a lonsdale
Many people buy this Cigar and lay it down for a few years. It only gets richer and more complex with time. This Cohiba tends to grow more complex and punchy as you move into the second half of the cigar. This cigar is a serious commitment and needs some time to thoroughly enjoy. (every moment is worth it)
The Cohiba Siglo VI
Size: 5 7/8" x 52 (150 x 20.64 mm) Cañonazo, a toro
Cigar review from one of our customers: "The Siglo VI is my favorite Cuban cigar to buy as a gift for a client or an old buddy. It makes a statement. I would argue that aside from the now elusive Cohiba Sublime this is the most well constructed and blended cigars to come out of Cuba."
The Cohiba Cohiba Maduro 5
The Cohiba Genios
Size: 5 1/2 x 52 (140 X 20.64 mm) Estupendos, a robusto extra
This Cohiba leaf has been aged 5 years minimum before it is
made into a cigar. In addition to this unlike many other maduros the
wrapper isn’t the only part of the cigar that is aged. Cohiba has
elected to use several aged leaves along with the standard Cohiba
tobacco.
A lot of these boxes have already been laid down for a couple years. The construction is amazing (I know because I have now smoked 8 this
month). The draw is perfect, not too tight but wrapped well enough to
control the burn. The flavor is surprisingly smooth yet the cigar is
strong like a vintage 1980’s era Cuban cigar, simply amazing.
The Cohiba Magico
Size: 4 1/2" x 52 (115 x 20.64 mm) Magicos, a robusto or rothschild
A smaller smoke than the Genios this cigar is ideal for someone who has less than 45 minutes to invest in a cigar. The flavors are immediately present from the first pull and it is a well constructed full flavored maduro.
The Cohiba Secretos
4 1/2" x 40 (110 x 15.87 mm) Reyes, a tres petit corona
A smaller ring gauge than the rest of the Cohiba Maduros. This seems to bring out all of the flavors but slightly mutes the the sharper taste of the maduro. This is a very smooth, full bodied almost chocolately cigar.
